Sangeeta’s Diary: A Journey into the Mountains

Join us as we follow Sangeeta’s journey in the mountains through her diary! She takes us on an adventure where we’ll learn about mountaineering, facing fears, and the thrill of exploring new heights. Let’s gear up for a thrilling trip with her and her group to the mountains of Uttarkashi!

A New Adventure Begins!

On 2nd February 1984, Sangeeta arrived at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi. Twenty teachers from Kendriya Vidyalayas joined her, along with women from other professions, all eager to learn mountaineering.

But early on, Sangeeta was already feeling the challenge. The previous day’s 26-kilometer trek with a heavy rucksack left her feet aching, and she was nervous about continuing. Just as she thought of skipping the day’s trek, Brigadier Gyan Singh, the course director, encouraged her to continue – even assigning her as the leader of Group No. 7!

Imagine and Draw!

  • Have you ever seen mountains? Draw a picture of a mountain path you’d like to climb.

Let’s continue our journey of Up You Go and find out what are the responsibilities of a mountaineering group leader.

Being a Group Leader: Up You Go

As a group leader, Sangeeta had many responsibilities:

  • Helping others carry their bags.
  • Letting the group go ahead and staying at the back.
  • Assisting those who found it hard to climb.
  • Choosing safe spots to rest.
  • Arranging food for the group and ensuring everyone’s safety.

Questions for You:

  • Would you like to be a leader in a camp like this? Why or why not?
  • What responsibilities do you think a leader in your class or group should have?

Crossing the River: A Test of Courage

On 5th February, Sangeeta’s group had to cross a river! A thick rope was tied across the river, but the icy water and fast-flowing current made her nervous. With encouragement from her instructor, she held onto the rope and made her way across, even when the water reached up to her neck! When she finally reached the other side, she felt a special kind of happiness – the joy of overcoming a challenge.

River crossings are challenging but rewarding experiences!

Try This: Imagine Crossing a River

  • Close your eyes and imagine holding a rope to cross a cold, rushing river. How do you feel? What would give you the courage to keep going?

Rock Climbing and Rappling: Up You Go! 🧗‍♀️

On 10th February, Sangeeta’s group reached Tekla village and prepared for rock climbing. The goal was to climb a 90-meter high rock, which required special skills. They used a technique called rappelling to safely come down after climbing up. Sangeeta felt scared at first, but with the right instructions and a bit of courage, she succeeded.

Questions to Think About:

  • Have you ever climbed a tree or a small wall? How did it feel?
  • What’s the difference between climbing a high rock and climbing a tree?

Let’s continue our journey of “Up You Go!” and find out how we can communicate with simple gestures.

A Funny Incident: The Cucumber Adventure 🥒

One evening, Khondonbi from Sangeeta’s group was hungry and decided to pick a cucumber from a nearby field. But just as she returned, the owner of the field spotted her! They couldn’t understand each other’s language, which led to some confusion. Thankfully, with gestures and a bit of humor, they managed to solve the situation!

Try This: Communicating Without Words

  • Ask a friend for something without using words. Use only gestures to explain what you need.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever tried to communicate with someone who didn’t understand your language?
  • What would you do if you got lost or couldn’t understand someone while on an adventure?

A Special Guest: Meeting Bachendri Pal

One evening, the group was honored to meet Bachendri Pal, who had been selected to climb Mount Everest. Bachendri, who would later become the first Indian woman to reach Everest’s peak, shared stories and joined them in singing and dancing. Her presence inspired everyone, showing them what was possible with courage and determination.

Setting Up a Tent in the Cold: Up You Go!

On 18th February, Sangeeta’s group reached a snowy area at 2134 meters and set up camp. They used double-layered plastic sheets to keep warm and dug a drain around the tent to keep out water. That night, they cooked food over a makeshift stove, cleaned up their site, and finally slept in cozy sleeping bags filled with soft feathers to keep them warm.

The Last Day: Celebrating with a Campfire 🔥🎉

On the final day, the group celebrated with a campfire. Each group presented skits, jokes, and songs, creating a night full of laughter and fun. Just when Sangeeta thought the adventure was over, Brigadier Gyan Singh announced her as the Best Performer of the camp. It was a moment of pride and joy, showing her how much she had accomplished.

Discussion Questions:

  • Have you ever won an award or been recognized for something special? How did you feel?
