Can You See the Pattern?

Introduction

This chapter is all about recognizing and creating patterns through various activities and examples. Patterns are everywhere around us, from the designs of clothes to the arrangements of numbers.

Let’s explore the world of patterns together!

Making Patterns from a Drop of Colour

You can create beautiful patterns using a simple drop of color. Here’s how:

  1. Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half.
  2. Open the fold and put a drop of color on the middle line.
  3. Fold the paper again and press to spread the color.
  4. Open it to see a beautiful pattern.

Try doing it in different ways and observe the magic!

Turns and Patterns

Patterns can be created by turning shapes in various ways.

Let’s look at a block and see how different rules create different patterns:

Encourage your creativity by thinking of other ways to turn the block, including anticlockwise turns.

Practice Time

Let’s put your pattern recognition skills to the test with some exercises:

  • Exercise 1: Identify what comes next in a given sequence.

  • Exercise 2: Continue a pattern until it returns to the starting point.

  • Exercise 3: Write the rule for each pattern and choose what comes next.

Look for a Pattern

Activity:

Mark that picture that is breaking the rule. Also, correct it.

Magic Squares

Patterns can also be found in numbers.

For example, magic squares are grids where the sum of numbers in each row, column, and diagonal is the same.

Activity:

Try filling a square with numbers from 46 to 54 so that the total of each side is 150. Can you do it?

Magic Hexagons

Hexagons are six-sided shapes, and magic hexagons are filled with numbers following specific rules.

For example, each number in a box is the product of the numbers in the circles next to it.

Try filling in the hexagons below using this rule.

You get the number in each box by multiplying the numbers in the circles next to it.

Numbers and Numbers

Activity:

Check that are they equal.

We can perform many activities like this.

Left Right — Same to Same

Let’s understand this Activity.

We have a number 121.

Can you see something special about 121?

See it is the same forward as well as backward.

It is 1,2,1 from right to left also!

Example

Take a number, say 43. Now turn it back to front 34.

Then add them together 77

77 is one such special number. There are many such numbers.

We also have such kind of words

S T E P – P E T S

N O T – T O N

Calendar Magic

Calendars are full of patterns. Choose any 3 × 3 box from a calendar and find the total of the numbers in it. Multiply the middle number by 9 to get the answer even faster!

Steps:

  • Take the smallest number = 3
  • Add 8 to it  = 11
  • Multiply it by 9  = 99. The total is 99.

Some more Number Patterns

Activity:

Take any number. Now multiply it by 2, 3, 4 …………… at every step. Also, add 3 to it at each step. Look at the difference in the answer. Is it the same at every step?

Fun with Odd Numbers

Did you know that when you add the first ‘n’ odd numbers, the sum is always ‘n × n’?

Take the first two odd numbers. Now add them, and see what you get.

Now, at every step, add the next odd number.

Secret Numbers

Guessing games with numbers can be a lot of fun. Write clues about a secret number and see if your friend can guess it. For example:

  • It is larger than half of 100.
  • It is more than 6 tens and less than 7 tens.
  • The tens digit is one more than the ones digit.
  • Together the digits have a sum of 11.
  • The number is 65.

Number Surprises

Activity:

Play around with numbers to create surprising results.

For example:

  • Take a number, double it, multiply by 5, then divide by 10. What do you get?
  • Try making your number surprises and share them with friends.
