The diary mentioned in the chapter Omana’s Journey reads the following-

Our journey began at the train station, where we checked our names on the reservation chart. As the train approached, it was evident that the coach was already full. The train had started its journey earlier in the morning from Gandhi Dham, Kutch, and the platform was filled with passengers, causing quite a commotion. People were trying to get off while others were pushing to load their luggage, all through a single door.

Amidst the chaos, my family and I managed to find our seats and settled in. Amma and Appa had the lower berths, while Unni and I were assigned the middle berths. Two college students occupied the upper berths, and a family with two children, who appeared to be around my age, were seated near us. I plan to talk to them later.

Now, as I sit near the window, I’ve decided to write about the journey, just as I promised. Amma has opened the tiffin box, and the aroma of dhokla, chutney, lemon rice, and mithai is making my mouth water! I’ll write more after we eat.

Questions for You!

Further in Omana’s journey we have some questions for you. These are-

  • Why was it so crowded at the door of the coach?
  • Have you ever traveled by train? When?
  • What food would you like to take with you on a trip, and why?
  • What does the ticket-checker do?
  • How will you recognize the ticket-checker?

After lunch, some people in the compartment took a nap, but I wasn’t feeling sleepy. I stayed by the window, observing the passing fields, which looked brown and dry. Occasionally, we passed by small villages, and they seemed to be flying by because of the speed of the train. Did you know that when a train moves fast, everything outside seems to move in the opposite direction?

As the day turned to evening, the weather became cooler, and the sunset painted the sky a beautiful orange, unlike anything I’ve seen in Ahmedabad. We passed a station called Valsad, where the train stopped for just two minutes. Even in that short time, there was so much hustle and bustle. Vendors were shouting, “Chai! Garam chai!” and “Batata vada! Puri-shaak! Doodh-thanda-doodh!” We bought some bananas and chikoos through the window itself.

I’ve made some new friends on the train! Sunil and Ann are traveling to their grandmother’s house in Kozhikode, Kerala. Sunil was kind enough to lend me some story books to read, which will help pass the time.

Earlier, I went to brush my teeth, but there was no water in the bathroom. Someone mentioned that the water would only be refilled at the next big station.
